Sergio Marchionne says he wants Fiat to acquire all of Chrysler in order to better manage the two companies.
The CEO of Chrysler and Fiat, Sergio Marchionne, says he wants Fiat to acquire all of Chrysler in order to better manage the two companies as a single automaker.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Fiat owns 58.5% of Chrysler, with the rest owned by the UAW retiree Medical Benefits Trust. Fiat wants to buy 3.3% more shares of Chrysler from UAW, but is currently in a lawsuit over the value of those shares.
Fiat has offered $139.7 million for the shares, not even half of the $381 million the trust estimates they are worth.
The trust could initiate a public offering as early as January, and Marchionne says Chrysler and Fiat will cooperate with the trust if that happens, according to the Detroit Free Press. Marchionne tells the publication he is willing to buy Chrysler’s share on the open market.
